Gnotra (pronounced without the 'G' ) is a tropical planet, and the only terrestrial object in its system. It is inhabited by many exotic plants and animals, but contains no sentient life.

I'm still figuring out a few of the differences between Photoshop 7 and the newer CS3 version when it comes to making space scenes, but I'm quite pleased with this, my first CS3 planet :)

thats pretty good. one thing to think about is that light in space handles very different than filtered though an atmosphere.

in space you get very dark shadows and very stark highlights. atmospheres tend to scatter light however because of the lack of an atmosphere in space you won't get that same effect.

I couldn't get a cloud layer I was satisfied with for this piece either. It feels awkward and makes the planet seem a lot smaller than I wanted it to be, but I didn't have time to get it just right on this piece unfortunately and I haven't re-worked it yet, and probably won't with this piece if and when I get back into my space pieces.

cloud layers are ridiculously difficult to get right. I have never been able to make a texture that will work well as a cloud layer.

I wasn't necessarily going for photo realistic, but this piece was never one I was fully satisfied with anyway. It's a four year old piece at any rate, and I've learned a lot since then. I just haven't created any new space pics since. ;)

whoops sory about that.

could you send me a link to one of your more recent space pics then. also do you create your own textures for your planets or do you use precreated textures?

That one is my newest. That's what I was saying. I stopped making them at that point, because I was getting ready to move to Germany for two years as a missionary for my church, and I didn't have access to my Adobe programs during those two years. The textures are mostly ones that I've shot with my own camera of rust, dirt, ice, concrete, etc... a couple of them were stock from texture websites.

Nice! lots of people just rely on images from texture sites and such. Its refreshing to encounter another individual who makes their own textures.

stock is pretty good for learning how to create planets rather realisticly though.

nowadays I make mine from manipulated fractals so that I can better control how the planets look at a technical level.

anyway you have some very nice photos.
