Born in 1580, Massasoit or "Yellow Feather," was the chief of the Wampanoag Tribe of Native Americans when the Pilgrims arrived. He protected them from other hostile tribes and taught them agricultural techniques that helped them survive their first few harsh years.
This statue dedicated to him is located on the west side of the Harold B. Lee library at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. It was sculpted by Cyrus E. Dallin who also sculpted the original Massasoit monument in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1921 and was well-known for accurately portraying Native Americans. He was also the sculptor of the original Angel Moroni statue on the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, UT.
